Sensitivity Reading with LB!

We've gotten asked enough times that it seems time to go official. Have you created a piece of media with a multiple in it? Do you want the input of an actual multiple so you can write it stronger, and the Writing Multi post just didn't scratch the itch? Hire us as your sensitivity reader!

The folks at Write In The Margins went into more detail about the job here, but basically, if you're a singlet who worries whether your depictions of plurality would pass a sniff test, we are here to do the sniffing.

Sometimes, even the most education can't take the place of lived experience. It's common practice for a writer to, say, consult a cop or a computer programmer about their jobs, so as to write them more effectively. Why not do the same for multiples?

Sensitivity reading is not the same as conventional editing. Our focus is purely on the plurality depiction. We give the advice; you pick how to implement it.

Our price list:

• Prose fiction for YA or adults, from flash fiction to novel-length. Romance and speculative fiction especially are appreciated. ($35 per 10K words, or $250 for 50-60K words, starting at $10)
• Comics manuscripts or pages, though this is something you probably want to do at the script phase. ($1 per page, starting at $10)
• Character overview--that is, checking over a character for you and warning you if you're going in a direction that's been done a million times before, or doesn't actually work in reality. ($50 per character)

All of this is per round, by the way. If you go, edit the thing, and come back for more, that's separate payment that needs to be negotiated. And if you want something that's not on the list? Email us. Let's talk about it.

What things will you cover?

• Common plural stereotypes and misconceptions.
• Overall system dynamics and rule-making (AKA: how the plural gets anything done and keeps from self-destructing)
• Plurality in day-to-day life (example: how do you decide on what to eat for dinner?)
• Plurality and the US disability/welfare system.
• Plurality and homelessness.

Topics we especially enjoy:

• Trans plurality.
• Plural sexuality--both as in queerness and "but... how does that work...?"
• Happy plural romance. (We would love to see this!)
• Plural teamwork and friendship bonds.

Topics we CAN'T do:

• Losing time. We've never dealt with it in day-to-day life.
• Racial intersections with plurality. We can give you a good referral to other folks who might be better, though!
• Spiritual or metaphysical experiences of plurality. Our ignorance is too profound.
• Disability and welfare systems outside the modern-day US.

And topics we WON'T do:

• Designated evil system member.
• Multi serial killers.
• The multiple dead at the end, or returned to singlethood.

We feel pretty safe covering the more common stereotypes of multiplicity, the stuff that's been done a million times before and won't do your story any favors.
